Construction of Dormitory with restrictions in Győr

The new dormitory of Széchenyi István University is being built with a spectacular speed, the contructors started on the third floor. The reconstruction of the existed wings is being carried out, in the autumn they will start on the expansion of the parking lot opposite the university hall. Due to the works the college students have to move during the academic year and the affected carpark will be temporarily closed.

The dormitory’s development of Széchenyi István University (SZE) has reached a spectacular phase. As we earlier reported the institute’s dormitory will be one of the athletes’ accommodation during the summer European Junior Olympic Festival (EYOF), for the event the existing 450 rooms will be renewed and a further two wings (about 550 rooms) will be built next to the existing three (K2, K3, K4). Two out of the nine floors are already construction-ready.

The works are progressing according to schedule. Besides the construction of the new building the restoration of the existing wings are also taking place- stated dr. László Tamándl project manager, the head of the university’s application office. The old building’s insulation and the replacement of doors and windows had already taken place everywhere in the past ten years so the reconstruction means mainly internal works: heating modernization, renewal of heavy and low current, replacement of internal doors and windows, painting, floor replacement, reconstruction of sanitary units, replacement of furniture- he said. It says much about the volume of the investment that the K2-, K3-, K4 buildings take up 15400 squaremetres, the total floor space of the K0 and K1 buildings currently under construction will be 19400, thanks to the extra three floors.

The present wings will be separately developed in three phases, the are working on 150 rooms simultaneously. Two buildings can be used at the same time, so out of the existing 450 rooms only 300 can be used by students in this academic year. There will be 400 places less. Because of this for the admission probably higher points have to be scored than in the previous years. We have to get through this academic year, we ask for the students’ patience, in order to get a place in an expanded and modern dormitory next year-explained Eszter Májer manager of SZE University Service Centre-University Dormitory reffering to the fact that from September 2017 there will be 1100 more dormitoroy places. As before June all three buildings will be reconstructed the students have to move once into the neighbouring building interim-she added.

To our question as to what other measures have to be taken during the construction László Tamándl answered the following: Along the embankment restriction of traffic, the closing of a section of the Vásárhelyi Pál street remains in effect until June when the construction ends. The larger dormitory requires more parking spaces too, the capacity of the parking lot will be increased by storey extension, plus hundred places will be created. During the extension the parking lot will be closed down, those twohundred parking places can’t be used.

Dr. László Tamándl emphasized: the project suits the university’s strategy: it helps the placement of outstanding students on national level, the international opening and the building of the infrastructure necessary for this.

Part of the investment is the creation of a running track and a football field with artificial turf but these will only take place after the EYOF-we learnt.
